Western Hunting Knives
Weapons laws in western australia?
Ok so i’m interested in buying one of the following weapons, preferably from over seas as they are cheaper. However i know that there are pretty strict laws here which i don’t want to break. I’ve been looking on various government websites but none of them have very clear info so if anyone could tell me the laws revolving around the following, including on imports it would be much appreciated, or if you could link me to a site that would help.
Hunting blades (knives, machetes)
Blow dart guns
Bows, particularly compound bows
Axes
Spear guns

Basically there are two categories of weapons in WA: prohibited weapons and controlled weapons. It is illegal to bring a prohibited weapon into WA, or to possess, sell or manufacture it. The maximum sentence for doing any of those things is imprisonment for three years, and a fine of $36 000. Blowguns are prohibited weapons. Certain types of knives are also prohibited weapons, such as butterfly knives, flick knives, and knives that are disguised as other objects.
If is illegal to be in possession of a controlled weapon ‘without lawful excuse’, or to carry a controlled weapon in circumstances that could reasonably be expected to cause someone to be injured, or to fear that someone would be injured. The maximum penalty is imprisonment for two years and a fine of $24 000. It is also illegal to supply a controlled weapon to a child.
Bows (and arrows), machetes and spearguns are all controlled weapons. Daggers are also controlled weapons, but ordinary knives and axes are not. However, it is still an offence to carry a knife or axe (indeed, to carry pretty well anything) with the intention of using it as a weapon.
If you are found in possession of a controlled weapon, the onus is on you to prove that you have a lawful excuse, which does not include self defence.
