Saiga .308 failure to fire?
I have a saiga .308 semi. Only changed the stock from hunting to tactical. took out to the range twice. about 400 rounds total.
Can anyone shed some light on these issues:
1.out of about every 150 rounds i had about 10 FTF. 4-5 in a row. i eject the cartridge and i see the pin hit the primer but obviously nothing happened. i popped it back in the magazine and it fires. The odd thing is it happens 50 – 70 rounds into a session. am i doing something? is the ammo the issue? or is the pin?
2. recoil on this is a beast. i have a universal tripod at the end of the barrel but after a fire it goes flails and my time to require is significant. how can i improve this?
1. To give you an educated guess I would say it’s the ammo, however you don’t provide any info on the ammo used. Reloads could be improperly reformed and seating too far forward, but more than likely it is just “hard” primers sometimes found on discount ammunition. This is real common in the real cheap .22 ammo where you get about a 10% failure rate. However, since you can put them in and they fire the second time I tend to believe it is a primer issue. If there was grime around the firing pin the problem would usually be more constant. So disassemble and clean the firing mechanism, clean the chamber and try another brand of ammunition.
As a second thought if you are firing rapid fire there could be a heat expansion issue, but this would require a gun smith.
2. Get a more sturdy and heavier bi-pod, or take it off and shoot with shooting bags. Recoils is definitely effected by two issues, a lighter weight caused by changing stocks and the curvature in the stock. If it is straight back, like a lot of tactical stocks, then your should is the primary buffer for all recoil. Also when shooting from a stationary position you always get more recoil because you cannot roll with it, like when you are standing in the off hand position. Be safe.
