when was buck 120 discontinued and what was it used for mostly?
i understand that many hunters don’t like a blade as long as 7.5 inches (many i read say 4-5 inches is the largest they’d use) so what was the buck 120 used for mostly in the hunting practice?
and what year did they stop production of the knife?
I believe the Buck 120 was an “all purpose” (forgive the blunt terminology) blade… no specific purpose intended other than to do everything to a fair level of ability, and fail to excel in any particular field.
If I remember right, it was Buck’s comeback to the Ka-bar… kind of an alternative. I can’t recall when they stopped producing them, but I do not think it was *all* too long ago…
One problem with Buck knives… I bought a few (to copy from more useable stock), and it would seem the 420 stainless they use is in turn 420HC (high carbon 420, fellow bladesmiths: stop laughing) that has been cryogenically treated to add certain hardness to it… after copying a buck 119 out of L6 (yes, I make copies…), I decided to “torture test” the 119… weak weak weak. Snapped it like a piece of glass. Fairly good edge retention though.
If you’re considering getting a Buck for hard work, forget it. If it’s going to cut, use it as a cutting implement… just don’t expect to pry or baton it.
