How do i keep my RAT RC-5 Cutlery knife from rusting?
I have a RC-5 and i heard it rusts. how do i prevent it?
Clean it well after use; it’s okay to use dish soap and water as long as you rinse thoroughly and dry. Use soft cloth like old T-Shirt material when cleaning. Follow with a light coating of WD40, 3-In-One or mineral oil. Sharpen as needed. If rust starts to form, it will usually start at the sharpened edge and can be removed with a quick touch-up sharpening.
When possible, store it outside the sheath, particularly if the sheath is made of leather or nylon (they can hold moisture for a long time). Otherwise, make sure the sheath is completely dry before storing. When I’m not carrying them I store my knives separate from the sheaths in heavy cloth knife pouches, put the pouches in an air-tight Rubbermaid container and add a few desiccant packets (the kind you get with most electronics items that say “do not eat”).
I have several carbon-steel knives and rust has only been a problem when I forgot to take the knife out of its nylon sheath after getting it soaked while kayaking. A little steel wool followed by Emory cloth cleaned it up well, but you can see a dull spot and, as I understand it, that roughed-up spot will tend to rust more easily than the other polished surfaces (although it hasn’t done so yet in 8 months).
