Legal Hunting Ammo In California
Does anyone know anything about the KEL-TEC SUB-16CA 223 Carbine (California Legal)?
Im interested in getting this as my X mas present to myself but I have acouple questions on the rifle and the .223 ammunition.
First off I like how this rifle looks but I am looking more for performance.
does anyone own one?
I am also not familiar with the ammo. Will it be good for hunting small game. And is it a hot round? (as in ballistics)
I also want to know if a 223 is the same as a 5.56 round or is that the military version.
any help will be greatly appreciated.
i’m planning to by that same rifle too, but I learned the su16B (also ca legal) is better.
its accurate out of the box, generally averaging 2 moa or so. its more accurate than the mini14, cheaper too.
it accepts detachable magazines, both su16 mags and ar15 mags. its a plus if you plan to leave the state anytime in the future. better than a maimed ar15 anyway.
the gas design is improved over the ar15 system, less prone to jamming and lower tolerance, so its more reliable.
the gun is simpler than the ar15, but more complex than other .223 rifles.
it has a weaver-style rail on it, for glass or special sights.
the su16 will feed better than the ar15 or mini14 when using cheap steel cased rounds.
it has a build in bipod (which is somewhat flimsy) and you can fold it for storage (will not fire when folded)
fires cheap .223 ammo.
The .223 round flies fast and flat, accurate to 500 yards.
generally 2500-3000 fps, 55 gr to 70 gr.
the 5.56 military round to too hot for any rifle in .223. it can cause a gun to explode. but its not like you can get military 5.56 anyway. any 5.56 you’ll buy is civilian 5.56, another name for .223 Remington.
cheap russian steel cased .223 Remington would be around 240$ per case of 1000 on ammoman.com. you can’t mail order ammo if you live in LA county. In stores, like big 5, turners, (maybe walmart, haven’t checked) it averages 6.99 to 8.99 per box of 20 when on sale.
its a good rifle overall, so much so I’m planning to buy it around November. If McCain lost and Obama wins. Obama is afraid of guns and will like nothing better than to ban all firearms purchase and ammo purchase for the foreseeable future.
