Hunting Stand
Any tips for job hunting and interviews? what can make me stand out from the rest?
In the current climate it is very very hard to stand out as each interview i go to there’s at least 20 other people going for it (even 300 in one i wen’t to last week)
My C.V. is pretty standard but i’ve only had three jobs as I have been studying for 4 years
I wanna know what can make me stand out from the people who probably have better C.V.s than me?
Hi Kate, I appreciate it’s really difficult to stand out from a crowd these days. Firstly, the fact that you are actually getting to the interview stage shows you are on the right track.
This is such a wide subject but basic guidelines:
A CV should be no more than 2 pages long. Think about the employer having to look at 5-600 CVs! A good tip would be to include a head and shoulders picture of yourself. Also list any voluntary, charity, fundraising work that you have done. What you did on a gap year etc. Doesn’t need to be related to the company. They are looking for people who are positively active in their spare time.
Do as much background research on the company and the job you are applying for as you can. This shows that you are interested in the company.
We all know first impressions count.
Ask the interviewing company about dress guidelines for interviews. Dress neatly and smartly and be on time. Have a positive attitude.
A common question employers ask that throws a lot of people is ‘What is your weakness?’ Be prepared for that one! (Link source below).
Ask good questions. If there is a second interview leave questions about pay, holiday leave etc until then.
Above the obvious qualifications, employers are looking for enthusiasm and motivation. These qualities can help you secure a position over someone with higher qualifications but lacks get-up-and-go.
