What should I look for, while shopping for an apartment on my own ? ?
I moved from my home in NY to Tx due to family problems. Currently I am in houston trying to get a job and I want to move out on my own and be independent . The thing is I lack certain skills and Apartment Hunting is one of them . How would I not get scammed or get into any kind of trouble while shopping for an apartment and how would I get the most out of an offer ?
I am also planning to set up a home studio for audio recording ( mostly computers and few equipments ) Do I have to shop around for special apartments for that or it doesn’t matter..
#1. Check the local police department for the crime rate. Apartment communities CANNOT disclose that information.
#2. Check to see if the complex you choose is listed on www.aprtmentratings.com that is where residents of the complex can write good/bad reviews on the complex. Keep in mind that most people who get on there, had a bad experience. Most of the good reviews are typically posted by management. but if the community has a Roach problem…. you will see LOTS of reviews on that. Then you will know that it is true.
#3. Check the cars in the complex… that can tell you alot about the people who live there. Look at the grounds. is there trash everywhere? how bout the dumpsters? is there couches piled by the dumpsters? that will tell you alot about maintnance.
#4. look to see if there are alot of students there. Noise wouldnt be too much of a problem at a collage property. But most that are not, you would prob get lots of complaints.
Those are just a few IMPORTANT tips. I could sit here all day and go on and on but unfortainatly, im working and can’t! But I hope I helped
