Is it morally acceptable to poison rhino horn to save them from poachers?
Rhinos have long been hunted for the supposed medicinal properties of their horns. They actually have no medicinal value, and selling rhino horn is illegal under the CITES agreement but this doesn’t stop a lucrative trade in them in the international alternative medicine market, driven largely by Chinese traditional medicines. The prices for the illegal horn are high enough to encourage black market poachers with enough funds to use helicopters, high powered rifles and infra-red equipment in hunting their highly endangered prey (four of five rhino species are listed as endangered).
Now one rhino park owner is fighting back by injecting poison into the horns of his rhinos. It doesn’t harm the animals (there is no blood flow in the horn, which is made of compressed hair-like fibres), but could prove harmful or even fatal when ingested by consumers of the illegal product.

What do you think of this strategy?
I think it is pointless as it is just a band-aid fix. The only way to combat this problem is to treat it like the US treats the hardcore drug industry.
