Handicapped Hunting

Did Crash Team Racing’s handicap feature drive anyone else insane?
Remember it? On the original PlayStation, you’d be cruising along, half a lap ahead for the first two laps…. And then BAM. Everybody behind you gets masks, missiles, and those things that hunt down the guy in first place. Whammo, you finish in last place. Every time. Every. Damn. Time. The worse you do, the more the game rewards you. The best strategy is to hold last place until the final lap.
I mean, if you could turn that garbage off, or disable the weapons, it’d be the greatest game ever. Battling was still awesome though.
