Ground Hunting

what is a good caliber gun for hunting everything from ground hogs to coyotes?

I am a long time Alaskan varmint shooter.

What caliber you choose depends on what kind of terrain you are shooting across, how long a distance, your shooting skills, and how much money you don’t mind spending on ammo.

The best calibers are 17HMR, 22 Hornet, 204 Ruger, 223 Rem and FN 5.7×28mm

For close in 30 yards to 200 yards you will find the 17HMR and 22 Hornet are totally perfect. Ammo cost is ok, and, if you have really good marksmanship skills you can extend the range to 300-350 yards but that is about it.

The 204 and 22 Hornet (again) is a good choice for 50-250 yard work. A bit too much power for close in work. Ammo can be expensive and hard to find.

The 5.7×28mm is a new FN caliber for NATO. If you have an AR-15 you can buy an upper in this caliber. It has a bit more power than the 22 Hornet but not as much as the 223. This would be a geat varmint caliber – the factory loaded ammo is the totally awesome Nosler Ballist Tip 40gr – it would be great from 75 to 500 yards. A bit too much for close in work.

For 100-500 yards varmint shooting you are looking at the 223 and 5.7×28mm. The 223 is too much for close in work – but – if you like seeing ground hogs turn into a fine red mist, this could be the gun for you! 223 ammo is cheap, easy to find, and lots and lots of selection. Most bolt acton Rem and Win rifles are still 1:12 twist for 30-45gr varmint ammo – this stuff is impossible to find unless you reload!! The Ruger Model 77 and the Model 77 Hawkeye carbine are both 1:9 twist in 223 Rem and lets you use a huge assortment of military and very sweet match ammo.

Take a peek at the BSA ‘Sweet 17′ and ‘Sweet 223′ rifle scopes at www.midwayusa.com because these are the bee’s knee’s for accuratly going from 50 yards to 500 yards. They have a BDC designed specifically for the caliber. I have several expensive Leupold scopes in my safe, but, I chooe to put the Sweet 223 on my varmint rifle. If nothing – you should choose between the 17 and 223 based on being able to use these affordable and awesome scopes.
