Deer Hunting Varmint
How can I modify my Remington 700 SPS in order to make it a long distance competition rifle?
I have a Remington 700 SPS in .308 Winchester. I looked at the SPS Varmint when purchasing the gun but I was told by the gun dealer that it was not a versatile gun if I decided to go deer hunting. So, I bought the standard Remington 700 SPS, standard stock, trigger and without the heavy barrel. Is there anything I could do to upgrade my rifle and make it into a long range competition rifle? Im open for ideas and have a pretty decent budget for modifications.

They do not make just one gun that does it all. If they did – my wife would have bought me one and sold the other dozens in the safe.
You desperatly need to visit your state’s annual State Rifle Competition this year and see what kind of rifle the people are shooting. Hint: They are NOT using bolt guns.
I am a regular at the Alaska State Rifle Championships held each year at the Pendau Range on Ft Richardson just outside Anchorage, Alaska. They use NRA Highpower Rifle Rules – that is AR-15’s, M1a, and M1 Garrands in ‘as issued’ condition are the only rifles allowed for the main 120 round event on Saturday and the 80 round EIC event on Sunday. The only time a bolt gun is allowed – the unofficial warm up practice Friday afternoon – they hold three 20 round 600 yard matches – you can use a scoped 700 SPS for the last 20 round match. It does not count for squat.
To my knowledge – all the rest of the 50 states and US Teritories use NRA Highpower Rules for all state, regional, and national shooting competitons which are 200, 300 and 600 yard shooting with only open sights – no scope. It is all done with semi-auto rifles. No SPS’s.
The only reason to put a bull barrel or fluted bull barrel on a bolt action rifle is to help disipate the heat when firing 20+ rounds in 20 minutes during competition or varmint shooting. If you are not doing this – then a standard barrel will work great and you just need to tape a piece of cardboard under the front of your scope and call it good.
Your SPS was designed for someone with expert and master level skills. After the first 2,000 rounds the barrel becomes the same as a standard one. When a newbie or novice buys a SPS it does not make them shoot any better……… worse …….. by the time they are good enough to actually put the SPS to the challenge the barrel is already washed out and entering old age.
I have a 400 yard range just 7 minutes from my home, a city owned 300 yard 20 positon range 11 minutes from my house and a military 600 yard KD range about 15 minutes away. I have to drive about a half hour to get to a 1,000 yard range. Unless you have unrestricted access to a 600 or 1000 yard range – why bother with an SPS? It’s like buyin a sports car to use in your 20 foot driveway.
Bottom line. Every shooting club has different kinds of competition the locals like to do. Some it is Silhouette, some NRA highpower – but – you need to know what they are doing for ‘competition’ before you buy a competition rifle. If you don’t know what is being shot, or, who is doing it – how do you know what to buy?????
