Deer Hunting Equipment Archery Equipment
Thinking about starting bowhunting for deer/bear, any advice for a novice?
I work & live in northern MN, & started deer hunting after moving up here 2 years ago. I am planning on purchasing a decent hunting rifle this summer (been borrowing one from friends/family) but given the insane number of southern MN/city hunters that flock up here during firearms season, I am considering trying archery season next year.
I’m only 5′1″, & have average upper body strength for a 27 yr old, & I’m just looking for a little advice from more seasoned archery hunters on potential bows & the necessary hunting equipment for archery.
I’ve got a portable stand, trail camera, & basic camo, so the main information I’m looking for is bow styles, costs, recommended bow for novice hunters, & what to expect from bowhunting (typical ranges for novice, types of arrows to use, amount of annual practice, & any recommended equipment that improves your hunt).

To get into bowhunting, you need to be fitted properly. Bows are like shoes, one size does not fit all. Without proper fitting, you will struggle to be accurate. This is the most important aspect for getting a bow. You will want to visit a local pro shop or archery club for advice in this.
Once you have this information, you can then start purchasing equipment to fit your needs. Obviously your choice of equipment will differ slightly than a target shooter.
My guess is you will have about a 24-25″ draw length. Get a weight you can comfortably draw. You do not need a ton of draw weight to shoot deer or bears with.
A good starter bow will run you about $299 and up. One of the best packages we have seen is the Bowtech tomkat package at $549
