As a handgun hunter who has hunted and taken large mule deer with a 357, let me say this is a sport for very realistic people. Only the heavy JHP’s at top loadings, broadside centered lung presentations within the range that the individual shooter can keep all their hits on an 8 inch paper plate at, and the concentration on not screwing up a job which only comes with experience. Now with your Marlin rifle in 357, the rules change. Normal woods visibility distance is usually less than 100 yards, and that is certainly within the effectiveness range of 357 ammo with the velocity boost and longer sights radius from a longer barrel. However, with the higher velocity, those usual JHP’s are going to explode and not penetrate the vitals. You must use JSP ammo in 158 grain weight or so. But if you special mailorder, and get the big 180 grain JHP’s, the extra weight will create slower velocity, so they not only won’t explode, but will penetrate deeply on larger bodied animals. It is controversial if this includes elk, but certainly only broadside lung shots should be considered for 180 grain Marlin elk. Some use the big 180 grainers in their handguns, but this lowers velocity there too, and range suffers. Regards, Larry.
